The Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation and HIGHWAYS — a project of the Windmill Alliance — will be providing turkeys and groceries to the less fortunate for Thanksgiving during a pair of food drives.

The city of Bayonne, which will also be participating in the food drive, is accepting food donations at the Office on Aging at City Hall at 630 Ave. C and at the circulation desk at the library at 697 Ave. C.

“Canned goods and other non-perishable grocery items are most welcome,” said Mayor Jimmy Davis. “This Thanksgiving food drive is a great opportunity for individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to show that Bayonne is a caring community. Thanks in advance to everyone for your help.”

Both the BEOF and HIGHWAYS are accepting financial contributions, in order to cover the cost of turkeys and other items that will go to needy households.

Tax-deductible contributions for the food drive to HIGHWAYS should be made in checks payable to the Windmill Alliance. The memo line of the check should specify “HIGHWAYS holiday food drive only.” Send checks to Windmill Alliance, 141 Broadway, Bayonne, NJ 07002.

Tax-deductible contributions for the BEOF food drive should be made in checks payable to the BEOF. The memo line of the check should specify “BEOF Thanksgiving food drive only.” Send checks to BEOF, P.O. Box 1032, Bayonne, NJ 07002.

The BEOF is looking for volunteers to put grocery bags together with turkeys for less fortunate families. Donations of turkeys are also appreciated. Last year, the BEOF was able to help more than 400 families in need at Thanksgiving.

So far this year, HIGHWAYS has received requests for help with Thanksgiving food from 200 families and individuals.

Cookie’s Food Drive, the collection at City Hall, is named after the late Cookie Daughtrey, who organized the drive for many years.

By: Felix Alarcon

A non-profit organization in Bayonne, The Windmill Alliance, will be offering English as a Second Language classes for just $10 this spring and is looking for volunteers to help administer the program.

The Rev. Rose Cohen Hassan, the ESL program director, said the program has been in the planning stage for two years, but with The Windmill Alliance receiving a grant, the ESL program has now come to fruition.

“This is important for the community and our clients at HIGHWAYS,” said Hassan. “Our clients are mostly immigrants, many of them from Egypt, who have come to this country after the Arab Spring, as well as Spanish and Polish speakers, who are very educated in their country, but are underemployed here.”

Helping Individuals Gain Hope Will Always Yield Success (HIGHWAYS), a program of The Windmill Alliance, offers crisis prevention, emergency food pantry, thrift store, job training, counseling and now ESL classes for Bayonne residents.

The classes are sponsored in collaboration with Grace Lutheran Church and Trinity Parish in Bergen Point.

HIGHWAYS is looking for volunteers interested in teaching and childcare, for parents during classes. The program will hold training sessions for teachers and childcare volunteers on Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m to 8 p.m.

“After having done this (program) in Kearny for years, volunteers found this to be the most rewarding things they’ve done in their lives,” Hassan said. “The people in the classes are motivated and want to learn.”

ESL class registrations will be held on March 4 and March 11 at 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Students must pay $20 at the time of registration, but $10 will be returned upon the completion of the semester. The class runs for 10 weeks beginning March 18. The last class is June 3.

Regular classes and make-up classes, will be held at Grace Lutheran Church on 836 Avenue C.

“We’re hoping to serve our community,” said Hassan about the impact the ESL program will have on Bayonne.

For more information e-mail Rev. Rose Cohen Hassan, ESL program director at RCHassan@windmallalliance.org or call (201) 471-2634.

Mariam Abdelseed stands outside the doors of the H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. (Helping Individuals Gain Hope Will Always Yield Success) with three other women, a child in a stroller and recycled yellow plastic shopping bags in hand. She is one of many Bayonne residents who will brace the cold this holiday season and wat in line for food.

“I come here every two weeks to get food for my kids,” said Abdelseed. She has three children, 9, 7, and 3 years old.

Abdelseed has been coming twice a month, for the last three months, at 1:30 p.m., the starting time for the pantry’s food distribution.

“I get food and sometimes clothing for my kids, here,” said Abdelseed.

The Rev. Rose Cohen Hassan, manager of social services, has worked with H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. for two and a half years.

“Last year we helped 180 families and this year we have 280 registered,” she said.

Registration for their Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas Toys program has reached capacity. The program provides families with a Thanksgiving turkey and canned foods to go along with the meal. The Christmas Toys program provides children from low-income families with a few gifts for the holidays.

“All the families have registered for the program,” said Hassan.

There has been a sharp increase in families relying on the food pantry’s help but Hassan said, “We’ve been blessed. The community has been overwhelmingly good with donations.”

Hassan has seen her clients affected by the cut in funds to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

“We’ve had people not have enough money to buy their groceries,” said Hassan.

On Nov. 1, a temporary spending boost for SNAP was halted, resulting in cuts of $5 billion in food aid, affecting roughly 47 million Americans.

“We’ve asked them to come twice a month,” said Hassan, due to limited supply.

Hassan said that H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. still needs donations of turkeys, canned yams and foods that are Thanksgiving related.

“Christmas is close and we’re in desperate need of toys for children and teens. We’re always short of supply,” said Hassan.

Hassan said financial donations are welcome and checks can be dropped off or mailed to 184 Hobart Ave, Bayonne, NJ 07002.
