H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. was established in 1987 and continues to
be sustained by the work of about 50 community volunteers
from area churches and temples. Through the massive efforts
of these volunteers, H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. is not only self-sufficient,
but is able to provide financial subsidy to the Center and
the Supportive Living Program.
H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. maintains a thrift shop, and offers low-cost
items such as clothing, furniture and food - according to
the individual’s ability to pay. H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S.
coordinates the community’s emergency food bank, and
assists the American Red Cross, homeless shelters, and a battered
women’s shelter with furniture and supplies to support
a new beginning.
In addition, H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. provides individual services
that focus on concrete assistance and counseling to address
barriers to self-sufficiency. A staff social worker is
on hand to work with disadvantaged single women and men, single
parents, and families. Many of those who receive help
are homeless.
