The Windmill Center

At our Adult Day Center, we want each of our nearly 50 participants to have total success. This means reaching one’s full potential – beyond any disability. We have a team environment, where everyone supports, empowers and assists every individual to achieve total success.

The Windmill Day Center empowers developmentally disabled, and physically challenged adults. This adult training program provides services to participants who live at home or in an alternate community living residence.

Our program includes vocational and practical arts, activities of daily living, recreational activities, arts and crafts, and individual and family counseling. We are dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and to empowering individuals and families to deal with day-to-day issues, as well as to plan for the future and realize their dreams.

The Windmill Center fosters the social and emotional development of those that attend to a level where they can be more independent. The program is designed to assist individuals to care for themselves, to modify their own behaviors, and to increase their independent living and vocational skills.

The New Jersey Department of Human Services - Department of Developmental Disabilities, certifies the Center. The Center contracts with local companies for piece work (counting, sorting, labeling, and preparation of bulk mailings). The participation by those at the Center varies according to ability and interest. We believe that this “work activity” imparts a sense of purpose and accomplishment to the participants attending the Windmill Center every day. The Center also provides document shredding to individuals in the community who wish to proper dispose of any personal and confidential information. Our Center is open Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4:30pm. Transportation is provided to and from the Center every day. There is no fee if the participant is referred through the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities. A sliding scale fee applies if privately referred.

Supervised Apartments

Our Supervised Apartments Program is founded on person-focused values and provides the necessary structure, trainings and support to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents. Our goal is to promote self-determination, community inclusion and quality of life.

Our program has 24-hour supervision by trained staff. Caring staff assists each resident in the areas of self-help, independence, and community living.

We have eight shared apartments and a fun-filled community room for games, parties and group activities. Our recreational opportunities take place in the community, where our residents can enjoy the same programs as people without disabilities.

Admission Criteria: Usually through the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities

HIGHWAYS Thrift Store and Social Services

H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. (Helping Individuals Gain Hope Will Always Yield Success) provides crisis intervention, counseling and supportive employment training, as well as a Thrift Shop, emergency assistance to homeless individuals and families, and emergency food bank. H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. is sustained by the work of many dedicated volunteers. H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. coordinates the community’s emergency food bank, and assists various homeless shelters, and a battered women’s shelter with furniture and supplies to support new beginnings. The Thrift Shop offers low cost items such as clothing, books, toys, home goods, and furniture.

And you can help us to help others! Donate new or gently used furniture, household items, clothing and toys; volunteer in our thrift store; or become a job coach or mentor. Please also remember the holidays, and share by donating turkeys and food items for our holiday food baskets. In addition, H.I.G.H.W.A.Y.S. provides individual services that focus on concrete assistance and counseling to address barriers to self-sufficiency.
